Stellar was created in 2014 by the Stellar Development Foundation. Among its founders was Jade McCaleb, now the creator of the defacted bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, as well as co-founder of Ripple. Steller is an open source, decentralized protocol for digital currency to fiat money transfers that allows cross-border transactions between any pair of currencies. Stellar main mission is to bring financial services into the unbanked. To fulfill this mission, the protocol focuses on being as versatile as possible for an open and transparent finance future. This is what most projects on the network follow. Focusing on the financial solution to the Steller project is of particular importance to developing countries such as Nigeria. The old financial institutions are lagging behind, and the amount of money needed to modernize them is huge. Blockchain, on the other hand, is able to bring modern financial services at a fraction of the cost of traditional system.

The Stellar and Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) was created in 2014 by Jay Z McLab and Joyce Kim. The project is in many ways consistent with Ripple (XRP), where McCaleb previously worked. The SDF was created to promote global financial access, literacy and inclusion, By Expanding access to low-quality financial services worldwide through the maintenance of technology and partnership development. On 15 May 2019, the network stalled for 67 minutes due to inability to reach consensus. Unlike most other chains, which may temporarily fork when the network is not agreed upon, the network is completely shut down. Stellar Developers reported that a greater number of new nodes were the reason for the stalled, 'In Retrospect, some new nodes took on too much consensus responsibility too soon.' SDF nodes were not the cause of network failure. Stellar (XLM) is a payment protocol intended to connect banks, payment systems and people.
