While many have claimed bitcoin mining is bad for the environment and many others have stressed that it affects the environment in a positive way, either way, most are relying on unreliable and old data from a few years ago. On July 1, 2021, the recently formed Bitcoin Mining Council published a report that claims 56% of the hashrate uses sustainable energy resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Will Elon Musk Bend? Report Claims Bitcoin Miner Energy Consumption Mix 56% Sustainable<\/h2>\n<p>Bitcoiners are hoping Elon Musk has noticed a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hope.com\/content\/dam\/hope-assets\/collateral\/Mining-Council-Press-Release-Q2_07-01-2021.pdf\">report<\/a> published by the Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC) that shows more than half of the hashrate leverages sustainable energy to mine bitcoin. BMC published the report on July 1, 2021, and as soon as it was online posts about Elon Musk changing his mind started to appear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesla said they wouldn\u2019t again accept <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\">BTC<\/a> until energy consumption reached 50% from renewables,\u201d one Redditor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/ocw8oo\/tesla_said_they_wouldnt_again_accept_btc_until\/\">said<\/a> on Saturday. \u201cNow that <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\">BTC<\/a> uses 56% renewable energy, I wonder if Tesla will soon start accepting <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\">BTC<\/a> again.\u201d The \u2018Tesla accepting bitcoin again\u2019-Reddit post on r\/bitcoin has clocked in more than 5,700 upvotes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The BMC report explains that the organization collected information on miners leveraging sustainable energy from \u201cover 32 percent of the current global Bitcoin network in its first-ever voluntary survey.\u201d The results of the survey indicate that members of the BMC are utilizing electricity \u201cwith a 67% sustainable power mix.\u201d The BMC report states:<\/p>\n<p>Based on this data it is estimated that the global mining industry\u2019s sustainable electricity mix had grown to approximately 56 percent, during Q2 2021, making it one of the most sustainable industries globally.<\/p>\n<p><!-- growjs zone placement 31 -->    <!-- end of growjs zone placement --> <\/p>\n<h2>Microstrategy CEO: \u2018Report Draws Data From Miners Around the World\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The data is very different from the Coinshares\u2019 report published over three years ago and the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/elon-musks-50-clean-energy-bitcoin-mining-goal-will-be-complicated-to-verify\/\">unreliable data<\/a> stemming from Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) and the digiconomist.net index. Both the digiconomist\u2019s and Cambridge\u2019s data have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/figuring-out-how-much-bitcoin-hashrate-resides-in-mainland-china-still-mystery\/\">significant discrepancies<\/a> between both electrical consumption estimates and both have mining maps that have not been updated since April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Microstrategy and its CEO, Michael Saylor, a member and founder of the BMC, said he was pleased to hear the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased to see that the Bitcoin mining industry has come together, voluntarily, to provide critical information to the general public and policymakers, especially as it pertains to clarifying common misconceptions about the nature and scale of Bitcoin energy usage,\u201d Saylor said. \u201cThis survey\u2014 the first quarterly release of many we expect to come\u2014 draws on data from miners around the world. As I\u2019ve stated before, just because the Bitcoin network is decentralized doesn\u2019t mean it has to be disorganized,\u201d Saylor added.<\/p>\n<p>The BMC is made up of members like Blockware Solutions, CCU.ai, Celsius Network, Compute North, Core Scientific, Enegix, Frontier Mining, Galaxy Digital, Hive Blockchain, Ankr, Argo Blockchain, Atnorth, Bit5ive LLC, Bitfarms, Bitfury, Bitquest, Bitriver, Blockcap, HMTech, Hut8, Marathon Digital Holdings, New Data Ventures LLC, Riot Blockchain, and SBI Crypto.
