Bitcoin Upgrade Taproot Inches Toward Lock-in, Success Means Activation in November<\/h2>\n

Participants involved with the Bitcoin (BTC<\/a>) network are preparing to see a softfork in November if the signaling status of \u201cSpeedy trial support for versionbits #21377\u201d gets locked in this weekend.
\nAccording to the Github \u201cTaproot-Activation\u201d documentation<\/a>, the Bitcoin Taproot upgrade involves an \u201cupgrade that can be deployed as a forward-compatible soft fork.\u201d
\nThe upgrade also combines the \u201cSchnorr signature scheme with MAST (Merklized Alternative Script Tree<\/a>) and a new scripting language called Tapscript, Taproot will expand Bitcoin\u2019s smart contract flexibility, while offering more privacy by letting users mask complex smart contracts as a regular bitcoin transaction.\u201d
\nBitcoiners believe the Taproot upgrade and adding the Schnorr signature scheme with MAST will benefit BTC<\/a>\u2019s privacy and scaling.
\nAt the time of writing, the website taproot.watch<\/a> indicates that the current signal ratio is 98.39% and \u201c101 additional signaling blocks required for the softfork to lock in,\u201d the web portal says.
\nThe popular bitcoin evangelist Andreas Antonopoulos tweeted<\/a> about the lock-in period coming up and said: \u201cTaproot will be locked-in for a November activation in the next 36 hours. A big success for Bitcoin, Taproot introduces a second signature algo (Schnorr) and significant privacy features. Also a big success for the \u201cSpeedy Trial\u201d activation method with <\/p>\n

If Taproot is successful it will be the largest upgrade Bitcoin (BTC<\/a>) has seen in four years since the introduction of Segregated Witness (Segwit) in 2017.<\/p>\n

On Friday, software developer Jimmy Song tweeted about Taproot getting closer to lock-in. \u201cTaproot seems to be inching its way to lock-in. Blocks have been a bit on the slow side (projected difficulty adjustment is -4.5%),\u201d Song tweeted<\/a>. \u201cBy this time tomorrow, we should be all set for Taproot.\u201d
\nThe taproot.watch<\/a> programmer and noncustodial Lightning Network Blixt wallet developer Hampus Sj\u00f6berg also tweeted about Taproot locking in soon. \u201cTaproot is a 100 years softfork,\u201d Sj\u00f6berg wrote<\/a>.
\n\u201cMerging every contract and use-case under a single transaction type \u2018Pay to Taproot\u2019 will in the long-run yield a more fungible and robust blockchain. This is how you do it. This is how you design a blockchain,\u201d the developer Hampus Sj\u00f6berg added.<\/p>\n
