El Salvador has begun exploring bitcoin mining using energy from its volcanoes, President Nayib Bukele has revealed. \u201cOur engineers just informed me that they dug a new well that will provide approximately 95MW of 100% clean, 0 emissions geothermal energy from our volcanos,\u201d he detailed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bitcoin Mining Using Volcanoes\u2019 Energy<\/h2>\n

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced<\/a> on Twitter Wednesday: \u201cI\u2019ve just instructed the president of La Geo (our state-owned geothermal electric company) to put up a plan to offer facilities for bitcoin mining with very cheap, 100% clean, 100% renewable, 0 emissions energy from our volcanos. This is going to evolve fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The president soon followed up with another tweet that says:<\/p>\n

Our engineers just informed me that they dug a new well that will provide approximately 95MW of 100% clean, 0 emissions geothermal energy from our volcanos. Starting to design a full bitcoin mining hub around it. What you see coming out of the well is pure water vapor.<\/p>\n

Many bitcoiners welcome President Bukele\u2019s decision to use energy from volcanoes to mine bitcoin, seeing it as a bullish move. Thousands of comments flooded his tweet with tens of thousands of likes and retweets at the time of writing. Among commenters was Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey who wrote: \u201cBitcoin incentivizes renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microstrategy CEO Michael Saylor opined: \u201cBitcoin mining is the world\u2019s best technology for converting energy into prosperity.\u201d He added, \u201cBitcoin incentivizes renewable energy,\u201d tagging Elon musk. Saylor recently hosted a meeting between the Tesla CEO and North American bitcoin miners to discuss mining using renewable energy. The miners agreed to form the Bitcoin Mining Council.<\/p>\n

The president first revealed his bitcoin mining plans Wednesday morning on a Twitter Spaces room hosted by Nic Carter as the Salvadoran Congress discussed his bill to make bitcoin legal tender. More than 20,000 people tuned in to listen to the discussions hosted by Carter. The bill subsequently passed with a supermajority.<\/p>\n

President Bukele was asked if he had any bitcoin mining plans. He mentioned that the country had plans to expand infrastructure and stimulate development around its source of geothermal energy. \u201cOn the outskirts of the plants, we want to promote industrial parks where you can set up your factory and you will receive cheap, clean, renewable [energy],\u201d he described. He then suggested bitcoin miners might find these parks ideal given the close proximity to cheap, clean, electricity.<\/p>\n

Morgan Creek Digital partner Anthony Pompliano commented: \u201cThe president of El Salvador is reporting that the country\u2019s engineers have already dug a new well for their zero emissions bitcoin mining facility. This is less than 24 hours since the idea surfaced. Speed kills.\u201d<\/p>\n
