Cryptocurrencies \u201ccould have enormous impact on everything from ransomware attacks,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>CIA Has Been Working on Various Crypto Projects<\/h2>\n<p>CIA Director William Burns revealed Monday at the Wall Street Journal\u2019s CEO Summit that the agency is working on \u201ca number of different projects focused on cryptocurrency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responding to a question from someone in the audience about whether the CIA is on top of cryptocurrencies, Burns said:<\/p>\n<p>This is something I inherited. My predecessor had started this, [and] had set in motion a number of different projects focused on cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Burn elaborated that the agency is \u201ctrying to look at second- and third-order consequences as well and helping our colleagues in other parts of the U.S. government to provide solid intelligence on what we\u2019re seeing as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CIA director explained that cryptocurrencies \u201ccould have enormous impact on everything from ransomware attacks \u2026 because one of the ways of getting at ransomware attacks and deterring them is to be able to get at the financial networks that so many of those criminal networks use and that gets right at the issue of digital currencies as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government has made combating ransomware a key priority. In June, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/biden-administration-expanding-cryptocurrency-analysis-criminal-transactions\/\">expanded<\/a> \u201ccryptocurrency analysis to find and pursue criminal transactions\u201d as part of its strategy to combat ransomware.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Department of the Treasury has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/us-treasury-targets-crypto-exchanges-whole-of-government-effort-counter-ransomware\/\">taken actions<\/a> against cryptocurrency exchanges \u201cresponsible for laundering ransoms\u201d as part of the whole-of-government effort to counter ransomware. One exchange was sanctioned in September and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/us-treasury-sanctions-2nd-cryptocurrency-exchange-seizes-6-1-million\/\">another<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What do you think about the CIA working on a number of crypto-focused projects?
