A recent report indicates that roughly a dozen artists are considering taking legal action against an NFT collection called \u201cArt Wars\u201d because their original artwork was sold as NFTs without their consent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>NFT Collection Targeted Over Using Artwork Without Permission From the Original Artists<\/h2>\n<p>Non-fungible token (NFT) assets have seen billions of dollars in sales this year, and the term \u201cNFT\u201d was just recently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/nft-chosen-as-2021s-collins-english-dictionary-word-of-the-year\/\">awarded<\/a> the Collins English Dictionary Word of the Year. During the last seven days, NFT markets such as Opensea have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/dappradar.com\/nft\/marketplaces\">$587 million<\/a> in sales, Atomicwax has seen over $20 million, and Rarible has seen over $3 million in weekly NFT sales.<\/p>\n<p>However, certain issues in the NFT industry have been introduced in recent times such as problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/nft-immutability-debate-grows-as-tokenized-tweets-get-deleted-and-nft-images-are-replaced\/\">permanence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/political-cartoonist-accuses-nft-platforms-opensea-rarible-of-being-tools-for-political-censorship\/\">censorship<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/opensea-nft-marketplace-claims-employee-profited-from-insider-information\/\">insider trading<\/a>, and now artists are upset about NFTs being issued without consent. Financial Times (FT) reports that artwork by Anish Kapoor and David Bailey has been issued as non-fungible tokens without getting their blessing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7570bd42-0728-4e7e-b322-be9e5880e3d2\">report<\/a>, Star Wars Stormtrooper helmets crafted by Kapoor, Bailey, and others were photographed and sold as NFT without permission. The NFT collection sold for millions or approximately 1,600 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ETH\">ETH<\/a> which equates to more than $7.5 million at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<h2>A Dozen Artists May Seek Legal Action \u2014 Legal Tussles Rise Over Intellectual Property and NFTs<\/h2>\n<p>FT\u2019s report notes that the collection called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artwarsnft.com\/\">Art Wars<\/a>\u201d is approximately 1,138 images. Artwork attributed to Kapoor was being resold 1,000 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ETH\">ETH<\/a>, while work by Bailey was on resale for 120 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ETH\">ETH<\/a>. FT\u2019s Cristina Criddle said the NFTs were since removed from <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/leading-nft-marketplace-opensea-surpasses-10-billion-in-all-time-sales\/\">Opensea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 12 artists are considering legal action against the project, according to legal representatives,\u201d Criddle\u2019s report highlights. Criddle explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/unskilledworker\/?hl=en\">Helen Downie<\/a>, an artist that uses the name \u201cUnskilled Worker,\u201d may take legal action after noticing two helmets that were sold as NFTs.<\/p>\n<p>Issues similar to the problems Kapoor and Bailey are dealing with have been arising in the NFT industry in recent times and making headlines. Legal representatives from both comic book publishers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/dc-comics-warns-freelancers-nft-auctions-featuring-companys-ip\/\">DC Comics<\/a> and Marvel have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/marvel-comics-tells-freelance-artists-not-to-mint-marvel-brand-nfts-publisher-to-introduce-opportunities-for-creators\/\">warned<\/a> freelance artists not to use copyrighted material and characters to sell as NFTs.<\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed film director, Quentin Tarantino, is in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/quentin-tarantino-sued-for-an-upcoming-auction-of-pulp-fiction-nfts\/\">legal tussle<\/a> with Miramax over \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d NFTs.
