Twitter has set up a team to focus on \u201ccrypto, blockchains, and other decentralized technologies \u2014 including and going beyond cryptocurrencies.\u201d Initially, the team will explore how it can \u201csupport the growing interest among creators to use decentralized apps to manage virtual goods and currencies, and to support their work and communities.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twitter to Focus on Crypto, Blockchain, and Decentralized Apps<\/h2>\n

Twitter has established a dedicated crypto-focused team led by Tess Rinearson. She explained Wednesday that the \u201cnew team [is] focused on crypto, blockchains, and other decentralized technologies \u2014 including and going beyond cryptocurrencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter said:<\/p>\n

We\u2019re exploring ways to incorporate decentralized technologies into our products and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Initially, the company will explore payments, ways for people creating content to earn crypto, and the \u201cdecentralization of social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rinearson emphasized that \u201cTwitter truly \u2018gets\u2019 crypto,\u201d referencing the company\u2019s bitcoin tipping and non-fungible token (NFT) projects. \u201cBut there\u2019s so much more to explore here,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I build out the team, we\u2019ll be working to figure out what crypto can do for Twitter, as well as what Twitter can do for crypto,\u201d she continued, elaborating:<\/p>\n

First, we\u2019ll be exploring how we can support the growing interest among creators to use decentralized apps [dapps] to manage virtual goods and currencies, and to support their work and communities.<\/p>\n

In the future, the team will explore \u201chow ideas from crypto communities can help us push the boundaries of what\u2019s possible with identity, community, ownership and more,\u201d the crypto unit lead detailed.<\/p>\n

Rinearson noted that her team will be working closely with the Bluesky team \u201cto help shape the future of decentralized social media.\u201d Bluesky is a decentralized social network project funded by Twitter.<\/p>\n

She concluded:<\/p>\n

Twitter Crypto will underpin all of this work, and serve as a \u2018center of excellence\u2019 for all things blockchain at Twitter. We\u2019ll be hiring for roles in engineering and product.<\/p>\n

Twitter\u2019s CEO, Jack Dorsey, is a longtime bitcoin supporter. He recently said that his other company, Square Inc., is focused on helping bitcoin become the native currency for the internet<\/a>. He outlined a number of initiatives that are focused on helping bitcoin reach a mainstream audience while at the same time strengthening the network and ecosystem.<\/p>\n

One of the initiatives, Cash App, generated<\/a> $1.82 billion of bitcoin revenue and $42 million of bitcoin gross profit during the third quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n
