Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey has warned that hyperinflation will soon happen in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. \u201cHyperinflation is going to change everything. It\u2019s happening,\u201d he predicted. Many people disagreed with him, however.<\/strong><\/p>\n

US Will Soon Experience Hyperinflation, Says Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey<\/h2>\n

The CEO of Twitter and Square Inc., Jack Dorsey, tweeted a warning about hyperinflation in the U.S. Friday. \u201cHyperinflation is going to change everything. It\u2019s happening,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Comments flooded his tweet. At the time of writing, it had garnered more than 7K comments and had been liked 70.1K times and retweeted 22.9K times. In a follow-up tweet, Dorsey emphasized: \u201cIt will happen in the U.S. soon, and so the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The Twitter CEO\u2019s tweet came as consumer price inflation is running near a 30-year high in the U.S. and there are increasing concerns that the problem could be worse than what policymakers led on. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged Friday that inflation pressures \u201care likely to last longer than previously expected,\u201d and could run \u201cwell into next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, many people disagreed with the Twitter boss that hyperinflation is going to happen in the U.S. Patrick Horan, program manager for Monetary Policy at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, opined: \u201cIn the United States, hyperinflation is not happening.\u201d His colleague, Lawrence White, professor of economics at the same university, chimed in: \u201cWhat\u2019s happening is higher inflation, not hyperinflation (except in Venezuela). It\u2019s too bad that Twitter doesn\u2019t allow Jack to edit his tweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel Drezner, professor at Tufts University\u2019s Fletcher School, noted: \u201cI lived through actual hyperinflation in Ukraine in the early 1990s. This ain\u2019t it mate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Economist Steve Hanke, a bitcoin skeptic who prides himself as an expert on inflation and hyperinflation, commented:<\/p>\n

There have been 62 certified hyperinflations in world history. At present, no country is experiencing hyperinflation. Jack should know better than to tweet irresponsible public statements.<\/p>\n

While a number of people on Twitter disagreed with Hanke\u2019s statement, Dorsey simply replied with a \u201crolling on the floor laughing\u201d emoji.<\/p>\n

Some people heeded Dorsey\u2019s warning, tweeting, \u201cThank God for bitcoin,\u201d noting that BTC<\/a> will inevitably become the world\u2019s reserve currency.<\/p>\n

Alex Gladstein, chief strategy officer at the Human Rights Foundation, commented on Dorsey\u2019s hyperinflation tweet:<\/p>\n

Those shocked by this tweet live in a bubble of financial privilege. 1.3 billion live under double, triple, or quadruple-digit inflation: Turkey, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Iran, Lebanon, Venezuela, Cuba, Sudan, and beyond. It\u2019s already one of the world\u2019s biggest humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n
