Griffith was facing 20 years behind bars for discussing blockchain technology in North Korea. Around 10:30 a.m., Griffith pleaded guilty and accepted a plea deal with up to six and a half years in prison.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Former Ethereum Dev Pleads Guilty<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/ethereum-proponent-virgil-griffith-deemed-a-flight-risk-judge-denies-bail\/\">Virgil Griffith<\/a> appeared in court today and about an hour into the trial, the defendant pleaded guilty in an apparent plea bargain. The former Ethereum developer was indicted when he spoke at a blockchain conference held in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government accused Griffith of providing \u201chighly technical information to North Korea,\u201d and information that could help North Korea \u201claunder money and evade sanctions.\u201d While Griffith waited for his trial he was on house arrest and lived with his parents.<\/p>\n<p>On Virgil Griffith, here are this morning&#8217;s docket entries: guilty plea to Count 1 with forfeiture admitted. Defendant &#8220;remanded into custody;&#8221; sentencing Jan 18. Ironically, after that an order that his lawyer can take their fees out of his Coinbase accounts <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mTm6Q3DllU\">pic.twitter.com\/mTm6Q3DllU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Inner City Press (@innercitypress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/innercitypress\/status\/1442513924440694784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, at the end of July, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/former-ethereum-developer-virgil-griffith-arrested-for-signing-into-his-coinbase-account-report\/\">reported<\/a> that Griffith violated the terms of his bail and had been taken into custody. At that time, Griffith allegedly had his mother sign into a Coinbase account he owned but was barred from using.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Griffith appeared at the Southern District of New York courthouse, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ethan_Lou\">Ethan Lou<\/a>, a journalist, spoke about the guilty plea. Lou then added at around 10:30 a.m. (EST) that Griffith pleaded guilty and the journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ethan_Lou\/status\/1442496957985996801?s=20\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Virgil Griffith has pleaded guilty, in a surprise development. Plea deal with up to 6.5 years in prison. Judge will sentence on Jan. 13 next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVirgil was quite emotional. Deep sighs sometimes when he spoke. Unclear what new development caused this guilty plea. The paperwork was signed only yesterday. One possible reason is the barring of the remote testimony of an Ethereum Foundation lawyer,\u201d Lou further <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ethan_Lou\/status\/1442500945972137990?s=20\">tweeted<\/a> on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Russell Lee of Inner City Press has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/innercitypress\/status\/1442513924440694784?s=20\">reporting<\/a> on the trial and he <a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/innercity-press\/episodes\/Sept-27-Virgil-Griffith-pleads-guilty-on-morning-of-trial-to-DPRK-sanctions-vioation-UN-censors-e17v7ia\">discusses<\/a> Griffith\u2019s plea deal in a Monday morning podcast.<\/p>\n<h2>Griffith Tried to Seek Legal Advice on Explaining That He \u2018Did Not Attempt to Help North Korea\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In the initial indictment, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman explained that \u201cGriffith jeopardized the sanctions that both Congress and the president have enacted to place maximum pressure on North Korea\u2019s dangerous regime.\u201d Ethan Lou\u2019s last tweet notes that Griffith tried to get advice on how to prove he did not help the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The] defence had wanted [a] lawyer\u2019s testimony to show that Virgil had tried to seek legal advice and ultimately did not attempt to actually help North Korea.
