Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan has clarified the government\u2019s stance on cryptocurrencies, stating that the country is at war with crypto. He emphasized that Turkey will continue with its own currency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A War and a Struggle Against Cryptocurrency<\/h2>\n

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan answered some questions from young people in the \u201cMeeting with Youth\u201d program held with university students from 81 provinces. The event took place in Mersin, a port city in southern Turkey and an important hub of the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

A young man in the audience asked President Erdo\u011fan: \u201cMy question is about cryptocurrency. Recently, the central bank established a digital Turkish lira platform<\/a>. With this decision, is Turkey planning to open up to cryptocurrencies? \u2026 We are curious about your ideas on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noting that it is not their intention to open up to cryptocurrencies, Erdo\u011fan clarified:<\/p>\n

On the contrary, we have a separate war, a separate struggle against them.<\/p>\n

He clarified that cryptocurrency will not receive \u201cpremium\u201d treatment since right now Turkey \u201cwill continue with our own currency.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Erdo\u011fan proceeded to ask Binali Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m, deputy chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and a former prime minister, who also participated in the youth program, about his opinion on cryptocurrency. \u201cWhat do you say, Mr. Binali?\u201d the president asked.<\/p>\n

Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m opined:<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, cryptocurrency also opens the door to grievances. So, it\u2019s something that needs serious control.<\/p>\n

He noted that there are \u201cbad examples\u201d involving cryptocurrencies. For example, in August, Turkish police launched an investigation into a dogecoin investment scam<\/a> that stole from 1,500 investors, and earlier this year, two Turkish crypto exchanges were investigated<\/a> for fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the future, at your discretion,\u201d Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m said to Erdo\u011fan. \u201cIt may be necessary to make some arrangements as a state, as a government, in order to prevent these abuses and mistakes. Studies on it have already started.\u201d<\/p>\n
