Bitcoin is becoming legal tender in El Salvador in three days. However, a nationwide survey conducted by the University Institute of Public Opinion (Iudop) shows that seven out of 10 Salvadorans want the government to repeal the Bitcoin Law.<\/strong><\/p>\n

El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin Law Goes Into Effect in 3 Days<\/h2>\n

The University Institute of Public Opinion (Iudop) in El Salvador conducted a study between Aug. 13 and Aug. 20 of how the public views the country\u2019s upcoming Bitcoin Law. The institute is a research center of the Jos\u00e9 Sime\u00f3n Ca\u00f1as Central American University (UCA). El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin Law is set to go into effect on Sept. 7<\/a>, when BTC<\/a> will be legal tender in the country alongside the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n

A total of 1,281 respondents ages 18 and over participated in this national survey that \u201crepresents the entire adult population residing in the country,\u201d according to the institute.<\/p>\n

Out of all the respondents, 62.4% said they were aware of the approval<\/a> of the Bitcoin Law by the deputies of the current Legislative Assembly on June 9. Within this group, 70% indicated that they either disagreed or strongly disagreed with the government on the Bitcoin Law while 30% agreed or strongly agreed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the data show that about 70% of Salvadorans have an imprecise notion of what bitcoin is and 20.6% did not know what bitcoin was at all. \u201cOnly 4.8% define it correctly as a cryptocurrency,\u201d the study details, adding:<\/p>\n

Approximately 7 out of 10 Salvadorans believe that the deputies of the Legislative Assembly must repeal the Bitcoin Law.<\/p>\n

Regarding the potential impact of the Bitcoin Law on El Salvador\u2019s economy, a third of the population believes that prices of goods and services will increase and the overall economic situation will get worse with the use of bitcoin as a legal currency.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, about eight out of 10 Salvadorans said that they have little or no interest in downloading and using the government\u2019s bitcoin wallet, Chivo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The UCA survey reveals that there is widespread ignorance about bitcoin among the Salvadoran population. According to this opinion study, most of the Salvadoran population have a misguided notion about what bitcoin is.<\/p>\n
