A vocal critic of the upcoming bitcoin law in El Salvador, Mario Gomez, was briefly detained Wednesday. According to reports, he was arrested without a warrant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Critic of El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin Law Arrested<\/h2>\n

An IT specialist and founder of Hackerspace San Salvador, Mario G\u00f3mez, was briefly detained Wednesday morning. His attorney said there was never an arrest warrant for him. Gomez has been a vocal critic of the upcoming bitcoin law in El Salvador.<\/p>\n

The National Civil Police of El Salvador (PNC) said they detained G\u00f3mez \u201cwhile investigating financial fraud relating to an email phishing scam,\u201d El Faro publication described. A press officer at the Attorney General\u2019s Office told the publication:<\/p>\n

They tell me it\u2019s a move by the National Civil Police. Our office has no information at this time.<\/p>\n

G\u00f3mez\u2019s mother, who was with him when the arrest happened, explained that the police stopped their car, told her son to get out and go with them. She also said they seized his cell phone.<\/p>\n

The publication conveyed:<\/p>\n

G\u00f3mez\u2019s mother reported that officers presented no warrant when they stopped him in his car, and told him that if he did not come along, he would be handcuffed. G\u00f3mez then told the press that he was unaware of why he had been detained.<\/p>\n

Otto Flores, the lawyer representing G\u00f3mez, later told the press that \u201cApparently he [G\u00f3mez] was only being investigated, the police say it was not an arrest.\u201d He added that the PNC has released his client and taken him home.<\/p>\n

Flores further said that it was \u201cnot clear\u201d why Gomez was handcuffed and taken by the police. He noted that he and his mother were even lied to get them out of their vehicle.<\/p>\n

The lawyer added: \u201cThey [the authorities] do not want to tell us which unit of the Prosecutor\u2019s Office is processing the charges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gomez has recently been an outspoken critic of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele\u2019s plan to make bitcoin a legal tender, pointing out flaws in El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin Law which will go into effect on Sept. 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Renata Avila, co-founder of Progressive International, explained that Gomez only \u201cexposed flaws in [the] Bitcoin Law promoted by the government,\u201d elaborating:<\/p>\n

He is not \u2018anti-bitcoin\u2019 but someone carefully exposing the weakness of the initiative.<\/p>\n
