At the time, the Mi Store Portugal said it was working with the blockchain payments company Utrust in order to be more \u201cinclusive.\u201d However, the Mi Store parent company Xiaomi Corporation, which stems from China, responded to the store\u2019s decision to accept crypto and said it does not control the \u201cautonomy of third-party stores.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Mi Store Portugal\u2019s Crypto Acceptance Decision Didn\u2019t Go as Planned<\/h2>\n<p>Digital currency fans from Portugal got excited when they learned the <a href=\"https:\/\/mistoreportugal.pt\/\">Mi Store<\/a> from their region announced it was accepting cryptocurrencies for payments. The Mi Store sells Xiaomi brand smartphones and accessories and the retail store <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210805164308if_\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/login\/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FOficial.MiStorePortugal%2Fposts%2F988502345307701\">told its Facebook followers<\/a> on August 5, it would accept bitcoin, ethereum, tether, and dash for payments.<\/p>\n<p>Screenshot of the Mi Store in Portugal\u2019s social media post.<\/p>\n<p>However, the post has been deleted but a number of sleuths uncovered archived URLs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ithome.com\/0\/567\/712.htm\">screenshots<\/a> from the Mi Store Portugal\u2019s social media channels. The Facebook post said:<\/p>\n<p>From now on, shopping at Mi Store Portugal is more inclusive and comprehensive because you\u2019ll be able to buy your favorite gadgets using your electronic cryptocurrency or the most favorable one like bitcoin, ethereum, tether, dash, or the token utrust. Amazing isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Mi Store social media posts, the blockchain payments project <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UTRUST\">Utrust<\/a> which is the issuer of the utrust token, also tweeted about the Mi Store in Portugal accepting crypto assets. \u201cMi Store Portugal, the official Xiaomi retailer, now accepts crypto payments. Xiaomi is the 2nd largest phone manufacturer in the world, and now their local branch is accepting the Money of Tomorrow. Phones, wearables, and more \u2013 Shop now,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210804154102\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/UTRUST\/status\/1422924344766910469\">now-deleted Twitter post<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- growjs zone placement 31 -->    <!-- end of growjs zone placement --> <\/p>\n<h2>Xiaomi Corporation Responds<\/h2>\n<p>It is suspected that the Mi Store Portugal and Utrust removed these social media posts because of the store\u2019s parent company Xiaomi Corporation. That\u2019s because the Chinese multinational electronics company issued a statement about Mi Store Portugal accepting crypto assets for smartphone and accessory purchases. The company is the largest smartphone company in China and the second-largest in India.<\/p>\n<p>In both of these two regions, the governments have had a distaste for decentralized crypto assets. This year China, specifically, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/china-shuts-down-software-maker-suspected-crypto-related-activity-industry-wide-warning\/\">very harsh<\/a> toward the cryptocurrency industry and bitcoin miners. Xiaomi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizchina.com\/2021\/08\/06\/mi-store-portugal-accepts-cryptocurrency-payments-xiaomi-responded\/?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1628335315\">statement<\/a>, concerning Mi Store Portugal, indicates the firm was not notified of such decisions as the store is an autonomous satellite, and Mi Store Portugal\u2019s acceptance does not reflect Xiaomi Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cXiaomi Corporation would like to clarify that \u2018Mi Store Portugal\u2019 and associated social media channels are operated by a third-party store,\u201d Xiaomi said. \u201cWhile we respect and understand the legitimate operational autonomy of third-party stores, the decision to accept cryptocurrencies has no connection with the Xiaomi Corporation and was made without our knowledge or approval.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What do you think about the Mi Store in Portugal announcing it would accept crypto assets and Xiaomi\u2019s follow-up statement?
